Introduction

St Giles is a broad street that ran from the west side of the city and lead directly to the market place and a gate at St Giles' is first recorded in documents in 1288. St Giles' Gate was also known as Port S. Egidii (16 & 18 Edward I) and as Newport Gate, and was rebuilt in the first half of the 14th century under the auspices of one Richard Spynk, citizen of Norwich. The gate was demolished in 1792.
