Festive recycling made easy

Recycle right this Christmas

This Christmas let’s keep Norwich clean and proud! Norwich City Council is asking residents to play their part by recycling responsibly and avoiding illegal dumping over the festive season.

Extra waste from celebrations can lead to fly-tipping and littering, there are lots of ways to lighten the load when it comes to waste.

Councillor Emma Hampton cabinet member for climate and environment said:

“The festive season is a time for celebration, but it often brings extra waste. By following these simple steps, we can all help keep Norwich clean.

“Fly-tipping is a crime and costs thousands to clear up each year. By recycling responsibly, you help protect our environment, save public money, and help take care of the city.”

Your festive recycling checklist

Do:

  •  check your bin day - collection dates change over the festive period.
  • book bulky waste collections for large items - please don’t leave them on the street.
  • cut food waste by using your food caddie, if you have one, or turn leftovers into another delicious meal.
  • take excess recycling to a recycling centre - it’s free!
  • small electrical items including batteries can be placed in plastic bag next to your bin on collection day.  If the truck is full and the items are left, please try again the following week.
  • donate clothes and textiles to charity shops or use kerbside recycling.
  • recycle batteries via the kerbside collection or at local recycling points.
  • put your real Christmas tree in your garden waste bin (if you have one) or take it to a recycling centre (no tinsel please!).

Don’t:

  • dump items illegally: fly-tipping is a crime and costs thousands to clear up.
  • leave bags next to bins: this counts as fly-tipping.
  • throw batteries or electricals in your general waste: they can cause fires
  • leave Christmas trees next to wheelie bins.
