Questions to ask your insurance company
Before you start cleaning up or throwing anything away, make sure to speak with your insurer. Here are some helpful questions to ask:
- Who will they send out, and what will they do?
- When will they visit? Can you do anything before they arrive?
- Will they provide temporary accommodation?
- Is there anything you need to arrange yourself?
- Will repairs include flood resilience upgrades? (e.g. non-return valves on drains or water pipes)
What to do for your insurance claim
- Take lots of photos of the damage.
- Make a list of everything that’s been damaged.
- Record gas and electricity meter readings.
- Keep a notebook of all conversations with your insurer, contractors, and consultants.
- Save all receipts for any work or purchases you make.
- Tell your insurer if you move to temporary accommodation — make sure they can still contact you.
