Norwich Market has won the Best Independent Food and Drink Award at the prestigious EDP Norfolk Food and Drink Awards 2017, which took place at Norwich Open last night (September 11).
The annual awards, run in association with East of England Co-op, celebrate everything from great chefs to fabulous produce, pubs and restaurants.
Sweet treats specialist, Figbar, which has a stall on Norwich Market, won the award for best newcomer.
The council-run market has had a fantastic year with occupancy rates soaring from 76 per cent to 91 per cent, with many new food stalls joining up.
The market now has a more diverse range of eating options than ever before offering alongside its long-standing fish and chips, bacon rolls and hot dogs, also South East Asian, Spanish, Italian, French and Chilean street food along with fresh juices, falafels, lasagne and deli sandwiches.
The recent arrival of pop-up stalls has given the market even more of a boost by allowing people the opportunity to try trading on a trial basis.
To add to its accolades Norwich Market was also named one of the ten best markets in England by the company Culture Trip, which has over 9 million monthly readers.
Norwich City Council's cabinet member for the market, Cllr Roger Ryan said:
“This year has been a great leap forward as the first year of our ten-year plan to rejuvenate the market but we are not resting on our laurels and we will be continuing to work hard to sustain and build on the success we have already achieved.
“Winning the EDP Food and Drink Awards is the real icing on the cake and a reflection of what we have to offer.”
