One of our key corporate priorities is to make Norwich a fairer and safer city for all. Our cabinet recently approved revisions to the safeguarding policy.
This reinforces our commitment to the safety and wellbeing of all residents, with a particular focus on protecting vulnerable adults and children. These changes also support our broader vision for residents to enjoy better health outcomes and longer life expectancy.
The updated policy reflects the latest legislative requirements, including the Domestic Abuse Act 2021 and the Norfolk Continuum of Needs Guidance 2023, ensuring that our approach remains current and effective.
Key changes include:
Updated structure and responsibilities: The policy has been revised to align with our current structure and clarifies safeguarding responsibilities across all departments.
Improved accessibility: New links and resources have been added to make it easier for staff and residents to access detailed safeguarding information and guidance.
Updated definitions of abuse: The policy now incorporates updated definitions based on the Care Act 2014 and Working Together to Safeguard Children 2018.
Clearer guidance on reporting concerns: The revised policy highlights the importance of escalating safeguarding concerns and provides clear instructions for staff to follow.
This update is part of our broader efforts to enhance safety and support for those affected by domestic abuse, particularly in line with our ongoing work towards accreditation with the Domestic Abuse Housing Alliance (DAHA).
Commenting on the revised policy, Councillor Beth Jones, Cabinet Member for Housing, said:
“We’ve worked closely with partners and stakeholders, including children’s services, housing, communities, and health and safety teams, as well as our legal and union representatives. By embedding these changes, we are continuing our efforts to make Norwich a fairer and safer city for all.”
