Norwich City Council is set to mark the Battle of Britain, paying tribute to the Royal Air Force pilots whose heroics are often regarded as the “turning point” in World War II.

Members of the public are invited to join the Lord Mayor, Sheriff, veterans, and other distinguished guests for a wreath laying ceremony on Monday 09 September 2024. The event will take place from 11.30am - 12.15pm at the Norwich War Memorial.

Nearly 3,000 RAF personnel, known as "the few", participated in the Battle of Britain in September 1940. While other days during the battle saw fiercer fighting and heavier losses, 15 September 1940 is notable for being the only day when two large daylight raids were made on London. The RAF’s massed fighters met these raids convincingly, resulting in the Luftwaffe losing sixty aircraft and suffering a significant blow to morale.

This commemoration is also a time to remember the sacrifices of those currently serving and their families, as well as civilians affected by ongoing conflicts.

The Lord Mayor of Norwich, Councillor Vivien Thomas said:

“We are deeply honoured to commemorate the bravery and sacrifice of ‘the few’ who played a pivotal role in the Battle of Britain. Their legacy continues to inspire us. This event is not only a tribute to their heroics but also a reminder of the enduring spirit and resilience that defines our armed forces. As we gather to remember their sacrifices, we also reflect on the courage of those currently serving and the support of their families. It is a time for us to come together in gratitude, solidarity, and respect.”

A spokesperson from RAF Marham, commenting on the scaled-down event this year, said:

“Owing to considerable demand on the military music services and other commitments, we have been unable to secure musical support for the forthcoming Battle of Britain and Freedom Parade on 09 September 2024. Therefore, a Wreath Laying Service will take place to remember the sacrifices given during the Battle of Britain.”

Road Closure

St Peters Street and Bethel Street, from where it joins St Peters Street up to The Forum car park (access to the car park will be maintained during this time), will be closed from 10:30am until 12:30pm.
