Residents and community groups who have ideas to improve their local outdoor spaces are being invited to apply for ‘Love Norwich’ grants.

Projects can range from the creation of community gardens or murals, to the upkeep of local woodlands.

Offered by Norwich City Council as part of the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund, the grants of up to £1,200 are an exciting opportunity to support residents looking to turn tired and unloved public spaces into areas which inspire and delight.

Applications are welcomed that make improvements to existing projects, kick start new projects, or tackle local eyesores such as turning a graffiti plastered wall into a community mural.

Early applications already received by the council include the installation of accessible raised flowerbeds to create a space where neighbours can meet; improving the planting and biodiversity and the installation of benches in an existing community garden; and making improvements to a cycle speedway track.

For those starting from scratch, the city council’s community enabling team can offer support through the journey with help with seeking permission, providing guidance on running your group, access to training and opportunities to linking in with other like-minded community members.

Applications are also invited from informal residents’ groups, as well as established community organisations, working within the city council’s boundary.

More information is available at https://gettalking.norwich.gov.uk/grants or interested parties can also contact community@norwich.gov.uk or call 0344 980 3333 and ask for the community enabling team.

The ‘Love Norwich’ campaign was launched in November 2022 to action the city council’s commitment to keeping the city a clean and inviting place for residents, businesses and visitors.

The campaign also aims to build partnerships with residents and businesses to create real change where communities can take pride in their neighbourhoods. Community clear-up events have been held in fly-tipping hot spots, with the council loaning equipment to volunteer groups.

Councillor Adam Giles, Cabinet member for Communities and Social Inclusion at Norwich City Council, said:

“Norwich is an amazing city and we know people who live and work here care deeply about it.

“From the creation of flower beds and community gardens, to installing benches or tackling local eyesores such as turning a graffiti plastered wall into a community mural, the Love Norwich Grant is a fantastic opportunity to help support residents and community groups make real improvements to their local environment.”
