City to mark Armed Forces Week with flag-raising ceremony

Published on Friday, 16th June 2023

A flag-raising ceremony outside City Hall on Monday 19 June will mark the start of Armed Forces Week.

The Lord Mayor and Sheriff of Norwich, accompanied by the Lady Mayoress and Sheriff’s Consort, will represent the city at the ceremony to thank the men and women who make up the armed forces.

The annual armed forces celebrations begin with the Armed Forces Day Flag being raised on buildings and famous landmarks up and down the country.

Lord Mayor of Norwich, Cllr James Wright said:

“We will take this time to mark the start of Armed Forces Week, to pay tribute and honour, not just those currently serving, but also veterans, our cadets and all their families.

"I will also be taking a personal moment to think of those affected by current conflict, such as the people of Ukraine.”

Members of the armed forces community, past and present, alongside sea scouts and standard bearers, and invited guests, will gather on St Peters Street from 9:40am.

The Lord Mayor will say a few words, followed by a service with prayers, ahead of the flag-raising.

Cllr Mike Sands, armed forces elected member champion said:

"During Armed Forces week it is important that Norwich City Council, other organisations, and businesses up and down the country take pause to honour members of our armed forces.

"We must remember that it is not just during times of conflict that we call upon our armed forces, but also during times of disaster both in Britain and overseas, where they provide direct, practical and vital assistance to those affected."
