Car parking charges to start at Eaton Park from Saturday

The boating lake at Eaton Park in Norwich Published on Wednesday, 22nd March 2023

Car parking charges will come into effect at Eaton Park on Saturday (25 March) – with prices starting at £2 for up to four hours.

From today, regular visitors to the park will also be able to buy a season ticket for the car parks through the city council’s website. These will cost £40 for six months and £70 for 12 months, working out at less than £2 per week.

Cllr Adam Giles, portfolio holder for parks and open spaces at Norwich City Council, said: “We know how popular Eaton Park is and we hope that many people will be able to walk or travel there by other sustainable means.

“For those who do need to park, we have responded to feedback from the public consultation, keeping costs low and introducing a season ticket option and a 15-minute free period for families to drop off or pick up children who are doing activities in the park.”

Payment machines have been installed, a formal order to introduce parking in the park has been signed, the notice will be published on Friday and the charges will come into effect on Saturday.

The city council’s decision to introduce the charges follows an extensive two-stage public consultation, carried out from December to February. The move to introduce charges has the backing of those who responded to the council’s 2022-23 budget consultation in which they gave their support for the council prioritising increasing fees and charges to protect services.

The decision was made as a result of mounting financial pressure on the council, which is working to bridge a shortfall of £6.2 million in the next financial year.

In response to consultation feedback, the city council has been working with businesses, local schools and clubs to minimise any impact of the introduction of parking charges.

The city council will also be monitoring parking in the streets surrounding the park to make sure there are no issues for local residents.

Charges will apply to both car parks at Eaton Park, which will operate on a pay and display basis, accepting contactless payment – not cash payments.

The charges at Eaton Park car parks will be:

Monday – Sunday (excluding Christmas Day) from 9am to 9pm

  • Up to 4 hours £2.00
  • Up to 5 hours £5.00
  • Up to 6 hours £6.00
  • Over 6 hours £8.00
