Rose Lane crowned Britain’s best new car park

Published on Monday, 13th March 2017

The modern 595-space multi-storey has been named ‘best new car park’ at a national awards ceremony in London.

The city council owned facility took the title on Friday 10 March after being put forward by Huber, the company that designed and built the eye-catching building in Mountergate, Norwich.

Bert Bremner, cabinet member with responsibility for transport, said: “I’m delighted that Rose Lane was recognised as best new car park at the British Parking Awards.

“It was a pleasure to work with our project partners NPS Group and Huber to deliver this excellent new facility to the city.”

Officially opened in May 2016 and project managed by NPS Norwich, the car park was built over five-storeys and includes 36 disabled parking bays, racks inside and out for bicycles, new public toilets and recently installed electric charging points.

Space inside the building will also be let as offices or a café and the addition of 530m² of solar panels on the roof means the innovative building will help cut carbon emissions too.

Along with Rose Lane, the other car parks in the running for best new car park were:

• B4 car park, Birmingham
• Feethams car park, Darlington
• University of Leeds multi-storey car park
• Waitrose car park, Solihull.

• The five-storey car park is 85m long and 32m wide.
• It stands on 261 underground reinforced concrete columns, each measuring 24.5m. That’s a total of around 6.5km (4 miles) – the length of Norwich’s inner ring road.
• The structure is made of 504 tonnes of galvanised steel, assembled on site with more than 40,000 bolts.
• A total of 11,000m² of decking forms the suspended parking decks. Together with the ground floor, the total car park area is bigger than two football pitches.
• 1,950 cladding panels perforated with more than half a million holes make up the car park’s façade, with a total surface area of 3,700m².
