Disability and illness adaptations/grants

Disability and illness adaptations are available to anyone who is assessed as having a medical need for an adaptation within their home to assist them to live as independently as possible. Disabled Facilities Grants are a means tested grant available to help pay for any recommended works.

Adaptations can include:

  • Stair lifts
  • Access to your property
  • Access to principal rooms within the home
  • Access to bathing/toileting facilities.

The Disabled Facilities Grant is assessed on what is reasonable, practicable, necessary, and appropriate based on your medical need and your property. The grant can cover up to £30,000 of assessed adaptations.

Eligibility for a Disabled Facilities Grant

You may be eligible for a grant if:

  • you have a long-term illness, disability, or are having end of life care.
  • you are under 18 (application must be made by a parent or guardian). If the disability is due to a neurodiverse condition such as ADHD or Autism, an application needs to be made through Norfolk County Council Children’s Advice and Duty Service (CADs). CADs will explore all available options and refer to us for a grant if required. You can contact CADs on 0344 800 8020.

The grant is awarded with the intention that you will remain in the property for the next 5 years. If you are planning to move, the grant cannot be awarded.

If you are a council tenant and your current property does not meet your needs, we may discuss moving to an alternative home with you. For advice on moving, please speak to our Home Options team on 0344 980 3333.

Financial means test

You will be entitled to the Disabled Facilities Grant if you’ve been assessed as needing adaptions, and you receive any of the following benefits:

  • Universal Credit
  • Housing Benefit
  • Pension Credit guaranteed credit
  • Employment Support Allowance (main phase)
  • Income Support
  • Working/Child Tax Credit (where income for the tax credit award purposes is below £15,050)

If you are not in receipt of any of these benefits, you will need to provide two months of bank statements for all accounts you hold. You also need to provide evidence of any savings and investments including other properties. This will allow us to assess if you have a contribution towards the cost of any work.

We have a discretionary top up grant of up to £6,500 available to help you pay if you need to contribute to the costs of any work.

If the cost of assessed adaptations are more than £30,000, your case worker will discuss additional funding options with you.

How to apply

To apply, complete the Healthy Homes referral form

We will assign a case worker to support and guide you through the process, from assessing your needs to completing the work on your home.
