You do not need to apply for permission to keep hens but must inform us of your intention to do so. However you must apply for permission to build a structure such as a henhouse or run. Cockerels are not allowed on allotment sites.
The RCPCA recommend a floor space of 0.4m2 per bird which equates to 12 birds in a hen house built to the maximum permitted size. Access to clean water must be provided at all times.
