Allotment waste and polluting activities policy

Aims and objectives of the policy

This policy has been created by Norwich City Council in consultation with Norwich Allotments Site Representative Forum, The Norwich Allotments Association and Cottage Farm Allotments and Leisure Gardeners Association.

The policy aims to help allotment tenants:

  1. identify materials that are prohibited and materials which become problematic, when they are brought onto an allotment in excessive quantities
  2. understand what materials may be burned on allotments, how to minimise air pollution and ground contamination from such activities, and how to manage a bonfire without creating public nuisance or annoyance
  3. comply with legislation that prohibits unauthorised or harmful deposit, treatment, or disposal of waste

The policy demonstrates how the council can support tenants as well as enforce the allotment rules to ensure waste and pollution issues are dealt with appropriately.

Tenants are provided with information within this document on how to avoid the creation of pollutants to the soil and air which might contaminate allotment land, and cause harm to the wider environment.

The Norwich City Council allotment rules (‘allotment rules’) can be found online at www.norwich.gov.uk/allotmentrules.
