Smoke Control Areas

Norwich has three Smoke Control Areas to improve air quality, at:

  • King Street
  • Norwich Airport
  • Bowthorpe

The location and extent of these areas can be found by address on My Norwich, under the Smoke Control Area tab.

Smoke Control Areas are designated by way of Smoke Control Orders. These Orders are designed to reduce air pollution by prohibiting residents from using solid fuel burning fires in their homes unless “authorised fuel”, ie smokeless fuel, is burnt or the fuel is burnt in an “exempt appliance” which is designed not to emit smoke.

The King Street smoke control area became operative in 1968 and the Airport and Bowthorpe areas in 1972.
