Mural painters, street artists and illustrators are invited to create and deliver artwork for a new Air Quality Monitoring station on Castle Meadow in Norwich.
Materials used for the installation must be durable and should include an anti-graffiti covering.
We are looking for work that adds to the visual impression of the streetscape and enhances the city and its standing as a cultural destination.
The Norwich 2040 City Vision identifies five key themes for the city. The artwork should capture the Liveable City theme.

Notification to successful artists: Friday 6 May
Installation: Summer 2022
Eligibility
- Artists must be 18 years.
- Under 18s may apply with parental endorsement.
- Schools may apply with teacher endorsement.
Project fee
The successful applicant will be offered the following fees:
- Research and preparation: £150
- Installation: £300
- Materials budget: £150

Selection process
A judging panel will give final approval to the winning submitted design. Selection criteria is based on:
- the mural design/theme and how it expresses the Liveable City theme
- consideration of the context of the location and dimension and purpose of the air monitoring unit.
Design criteria
The design must have appropriate content for all audiences. Religious, political or commercial promotion is not eligible for this project.
The Norwich City Council logo and contextual information may need to be included.
The mural should be an original, one-of-a-kind, new piece of work; if known images are used, the artist/designer is responsible for obtaining all copyright permission and paying all license fees. Copies of permissions and licenses must be provided to Norwich City Council (if selected).
The artist/designer(s) chosen for this project will need to install the work in situ and explain the methodology of installing the work.
The dimensions of the Air Quality Monitoring station are:
- height: 1500mm
- width: 1500mm
- depth: 650mm
Safety considerations
The artwork must not look like an ordinary highway feature, or one which blurs the distinction between the carriageway and footway to ensure it does not affect visually impaired road users.
No trompe l’oeil effects should be employed that may confuse or distress people with dementia or disabilities.
Assignment of rights
Norwich City Council may use images of the mural during installation and on completion for marketing and promotional purpose. In all uses of the image, the artists/ designer will be credited.
Privacy statement
The information you provide will be kept private and confidential and only shared with an internal assessment panel. If your bid is successful, information in relation to your application will be retained by us for duration of the service provision. Any applications that are not successful will be immediately securely destroyed.
