Food complaints we can and can't deal with

If you have a complaint about food or a food business we may be able to investigate it if there is a risk to public health. For complaints we cannot deal with, we will tell you who can help.

Complaints that we deal with

Suspected food poisoning

If you have been unwell and think it may have been caused by eating contaminated food, you can report suspected food poisoning.

Problem with a food product

You can report problems with food products such as:

  • a foreign body found in your food eg piece of metal
  • food with visible signs of mould or decay
  • food sold past its use by date

Poor food safety and hygiene practices

You can report concerns about a food business such as:

  • dirty food premises
  • poor hand hygiene
  • poor food handling
  • unregistered food businesses

Complaints that we do not deal with

Please contact Trading Standards to report a complaint about any of the following issues:
  • false health claims
  • incorrect ingredients labelling
  • food not the described weight
  • misleading descriptions
  • inadequate allergen information
