About the census

The census, run by the Office for National Statistics, is a nationwide survey which has taken place, with one cancellation, every decade for the past 220 years.

Everyone over the age of 18 is legally required to complete the census, which serves as a snapshot of society on a specific date in time.

The census asks about a range of things, including:

  • work
  • health
  • national identity
  • citizenship
  • ethnic background
  • education
  • second homes
  • language
  • religion
  • marital status

How does this affect the council?

The council relies on census population statistics to receive the government funding needed to provide public services. This data is also used by the council to plan service delivery across the city, which is why it so important that you complete the census – it will impact the services you receive as a Norwich resident.

Census 2021

The official census day is Sunday 21 March 2021.

This will be the first census to be primarily completed online – although paper copies can be requested from the Census Helpline by calling 0800 141 2021.

From early March, most households will receive a letter explaining how to take part in the census. The letter will contain a unique access code allowing you to complete the Census online on a computer, phone or tablet.

Others may receive a paper questionnaire that must be completed and returned to the census office.
